Local Utilities

Electricity Services

Brockville's electrical needs are met by Hydro One. Rates are based on both type and level of user demand. Class 1 rates are for residential users. Class 2 rates are for regular commercial and industrial demand (0-5,000 kW). For larger demand (>5,000 kW) users, a special industrial service rate is charged.

Natural Gas Services

Natural gas services are provided to the Brockville area by Enbridge. There are several rate schedules depending on demand and type. The most relevant rate schedules for residential and commercial uses are Rates 1, 2 and 6. Rate 1 is for residential central heating, Rate 2 is for residential general services, and Rate 3 is used for non-residential purposes.

Water Supply

Brockville draws its water from the St. Lawrence River. The water intake is located in the west end of the City. It is filtrated, chlorinated and fluoridated at the city's modern filtration plant. The water supply is administered by the City of Brockville.

Pollution Control Centre

There is one pollution control centre in Brockville located at the eastern city limits on the St. Lawrence River. Here the wastewater is treated with ferric chloride along with polymers to eliminate phosphorus and remove the solids and chlorine to disinfect the water.

A schedule for city refuse, as well as collection regulations, can be mailed to you by contacting the City's Solid Waste Management Department.

Curbside Blue Box Program
The Brockville Blue Box Program was established in December of 1988. It has been highly successful and well-supported within the community. Blue boxes can be purchased at the Canadian Waste Services on California Avenue at a cost of $4.75/box. A schedule for collection dates and regulations can be mailed to you by contacting the City's Solid Waste Management Department.

Tipping Fees
All refuse is processed through the Refuse Transfer Station located on California Avenue. Tipping fees are based on a per refuse compartment capacity basis.

Other Brockville Environmental Measures

Brockville is very committed to the idea of being environmentally responsible. The city has created and implemented several "Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle" programs. Three of the most recent developments are explained below. Many more environmental programs are to come.

Household Special Waste Days
This event has been held annually for eight years. The program is designed for residents to dispose of environmentally hazardous material in an environmentally safe manner. The Household Waste Day has received great support from the City of Brockville. The 1999 participation rate was 851 households.

Backyard Composting Program
The City of Brockville has been distributing composters annually since 1989 in an effort to provide a more environmentally friendly alternative to disposing of organic waste. As of May 1996, the City has distributed 3,981 units. The goal is to distribute a composter to every family in the City over the next 3 to 4 years.

Leaf and Yard Composting Site
The composting facility was constructed in the fall of 1992. During the period of the 1995-1996 composting season, 353 tons of organic material were composted.

Telecommunication Infrastructure

Brockville has high band/high speed telecommunication capability provided by both Bell Canada and AT&T fibre lines. Additionally, the community offers advanced switching DSL service within 4.5 km of the central service. Long distance calling is provided by diverse fibre optic sonic rings that run between Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. There are attractive wireless options provided by private sector and Brockville has been designated as a megalink and microlink servicing area which provides connectivity to both the commercial and residential customer. It is estimated that 75% of the community currently has access to high speed internet service.
