New Executive
Brockville Operatic Society Inc. held its Annual General Meeting on May 27, 1999 at the River Walk Mill.  There were 36 members and guests in attendance. Entertainment was provided by Pat Marshall, accompanied by Donna Richards and assisted by Joy Goodfellow.  It was good to see some faces we have not seen for a number of years, as well as many familiar faces.  The members who had completed their terms of office were  Mary Hills, Ted Alexander and Cathy Tekamp.  We thank them for the time that they have given to the Society.  The newly elected members are Marg Alexander, Barbara Seabright-Moore and Cindy Wagner.  On June 10, 1999 Barry Whiteland was elected President, Shirley Smith Vice-President, Tina Van Bolhuis Treasurer and Maureen Overy Secretary.

President's Message
We hope you are all enjoying this long, hot summer.  While some basked in the sunshine others toiled indoors preparing for a most exciting and historic season.  First, Brockville Operatic Society Inc. and the Brockville Theatre Guild are combing forces and talent to co-produce "Man of La Mancha" in November 1999.  It's exciting to see our two organizations realizing that together we can produce excellence. Second, we are preparing to produce the delightful musical "The Boy Friend" in February of 2000.  It will be interesting to see what insights Barbara Seabright-Moore will bring to us as a director as we have all been very impressed with her talents onstage.  A very busy year to come that will require lots of hard work, dedication and money!  Yes, I hate to remind everyone but there is always a bottom line.  So I am appealing to everyone to, at the very least, RENEW your membership.  If you can afford to give a little more, THANK YOU.  If you can think of any way to raise money please HELP us.  We all love creating.  We all love applause.  We just hate working for it.  Well, if we don't all work and contribute, how long will the Society last?  Enjoy this season and help us to lay the foundation for future seasons, See you in the theatre!

AUDITIONS!
And now for something completely different.........  This IS exciting and historic.  Right after reporting on the casting of a show,  here we are telling you about more auditions for another mainstage show.
Our February 2000  (February 24, 25, 26, 27)  show is another winner.  It is a witty and stylish cartoon of the Jazz Age.  Director Barbara Seabright Moore says this spoof  will be done in a "frightfully  tongue in cheek" manner, with lots of high energy dance numbers.  "The Boy Friend" is set in the south of France, on the Riviera in the town of Nice, in 1926.  The place is Madame Dubonnet's fashionable finishing school.  Polly, a millionaire's daughter, falls in love with Tony, a delivery boy, who naturally turns out to be the son of Lord Brockhurst ( a lovable lech!)and his wife Lady Brockhurst ( a typically pompous British Lady).  To hold his interest Polly pretends that she is a working girl.  Complicating matters are Polly's three girl friends (all boy crazy) Madame Dubonnet (herself no mean flirt) and Tony's parents who arrive in Nice unknown to all.  It is a good humoured, tuneful and affectionate valentine to the innocence and high spirits of the Charleston, cloche hats, and short skirt days of the 1920's.
Auditions  will be held at Wall Street Church hall on Wednesday  September 8 and Thursday September 9, starting at 6:30pm.  The auditions will be by appointment so,  please call Mary Hughes at 342-3663 to book your time.  And remember to please bring your music with you.   If you have any questions about the show you can call Mary for that too.
This show requires young ladies, young gentlemen as well as older ladies and gentlemen for the following parts:

MAISIE, DULCIE, FAY, NANCY, POLLY  -  Young ladies at Mme. Dubonnet's finishing school.
MADAME  DUBONNET -  Headmistress of school
HORTENSE  -  her maid
BOBBY VAN HUSEN - rich young American
PERCIVAL BROWNE  -  Polly's father
TONY  -   a messenger
LORD BROCKHURST  -  a frisky old gentleman
LADY BROCKHURST  -  his stuffy wife
MARCEL, PIERRE, ALPHONSE - young men
WAITER

Shirley Smith and Holly Welch are co-producers for "The Boy Friend".  They are hard at work assembling the production team.  If you would like to work on the show please call Shirley at 342-7540 and volunteer your services.  This show has 3 acts, each in a different setting so it will be quite busy.   Rehearsals will start in November.  Remember this is our Y2K production,  so if you want to be a part of history, come and join the fun.
