HUMAN/NATURE CONFLICTS

Rabies

  • Avoid touching or feeding wildlife.

  • Do not let pets run free in areas where there is wildlife.

  • If you have had contact with a potentially rabid animal (and this may include your pet) seek medical attention immediately.

  • If you encounter a live, potentially rabid animal, call the local Health Unit or the Ministry of Health hotline at 1-888-668-4636, (8:30 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday).

  • If you see a dead suspect rabid animal, call the Canadian Food Inspection Agency at 613-432-3682.

  •

Insect Stings or Bites

  • Monitor someone closely who has been stung by a bee or wasp.  Ask if they have a known allergy.  Do they require medication?

  • Multiple stings or those around the face or mouth can be very serious.  Seek medical attention immediately.

  • The West Nile Virus can be transmitted by mosquitoes.  Ticks can transmit Lyme Disease.  Protect yourself from mosquito and tick bites by wearing appropriate clothing and repellent.  Check your clothing and your pet for ticks following a walk in the woods.

Human/Plant Life Conflicts

Poison Ivy

  • Learn what poison ivy looks like.  Avoid areas where it is known to grow if at all possible.  Do not allow your pet to run free in an area where there is poison ivy.

  • Wear appropriate clothing in areas where it is likely or know to grow, as a prevention measure.

Thorny Plants

  • Plan ahead and wear appropriate clothing for your hike when traveling in an area where thorny plants, such as stinging nettle or raspberry are likely to occur.
